In 1994 the zoo was registered as municipal enterprise “Chita city zoo". G.N.Industriev, the first director (1994-2001), made a great contribution to the development of the zoo. He made the first collection of Zabaikalye fauna representatives, exotic animals, and collection of aquarium fish. The collection of animals in Chita zoo contains 165 species and 711 animals. 17 species of the Zabaikalye animals are recorded in the Red book of the Zabaikalye Territory and the Russian Federation. One of the main objectives of the zoo is cooperation with a number of non-commercial organizations, childcare centres, and military units.
In 2008 the Zoo successfully held research and practice conference “The Modern Zoo: science, education and culture”, its proceedings were published in a book.
The greatest contributors to the development of the zoo were its director A.S.Kibalin, A.A.Shelopugin, V.N.Kaplin and some other people.
