Situated in the intermountain basin at the mouth of the largest inflow of the Ingoda river – the river Chita at a distance of 6197 km from Moscow, the “City of Chita” urban district is a key junction of western Russia, Western and Eastern Europe countries and China together with states of South-East Asia.
Its favorable geographic position provides the shortest communication linkage between these areas.
The City possesses transportation lines of international significance as follows:
- Trans – Siberian Railroad linking Russia, China and Mongolia;
- Chita airport being a junction of Chita and other cities of both Russia and abroad comprises both international and domestic flights. It has a great potential to service cross-polar air flights between North America and Northeast and Southeast Asia;
- International automobile check-points on the Russian border (there are six international automobile check-points in the area: two on the border of Mongolia (the communities of Solovyevsk and Upper Ulkhun), and four – on the border of China (the communities of Zabaikalsk, Starotsurukhaitui, Pokrovka and Olotchi));
- The Amur federal highway running from the City of Chita to Khabarovsk is the part the Moscow-Vladivostok national highway, the longest in the world (it stretches for 10,000 km).
Deposits of such common commercial minerals as sand-gravel aggregate, brick clay, burnt clay (additive for cement), quartz sand, building stone (granosyenite), and pottery clay found in the City area are the raw materials source for building materials industry.
Of vital importance are underground water reserves, fissure-stratal waters of intermountain basins made up of Lower Cretaceous sediments being the most significant for water supply. Proven water reserves to be supplied are 316 m3/day.
Numerous mineral water localities with unique diversity of balneological characteristics are located in the region. The Darasun, Molokhovka, Kuka, Urghutchan, Shivanda, Yamarovka, Yamkhun and Bylyra health resorts are founded on the base of seven most popular mineral springs, their proximity to Chita contributing to tourism development. Besides, unique lake Kenon is located in its suburbs, the Ivan-Arakhlei lakes - within 90 km of the City, with the Ingoda and Chita rivers flowing through.
