Chita is the city of science, culture and arts

Chita is one of Siberian cultural centres. The first private library opened in Chita in 1871, museum of regional studies opened in 1895 and drama theatre in 1907.

Chita is the birthplace of a great musician, king of jazz listed in the Guinness Book of Records Oleg Lundstrem.  Famous theatre and cinema actors Vitaly Solomin and Yuri Solomin were born in Chita. Sculptor Innokenty Zhukov lived and created its internationally acclaimed works in Chita. The names of surgeon Vasily Kokhansky, writer Vasily Balyabin, painter Leonid Ryzhov and other citizens are inscribed in golden letters to the history of Chita.

Such Chita bands as Theatre of National Cultures Zabaikalskie Uzory and Folk Theatre Zabaikalye, Ensemble of Russian Folk Instruments Named After Budashkin, Regional Drama Theatre, Song and Dance Group Zabaikalye Cossacks are internationally acclaimed.

Chita has never been a culturally backward city; it has always had and will always have talents.

Institutions of higher education in Zabaikalye offer twenty of twenty eight degree programs approved by the Russian Ministry of Education. They include 145 qualifications, 36 bachelor degrees and 27 master degrees.

There are more than 40 000 students.
